The Cast of Characters, Canine

Our human host, Kyra, is terrific, but let’s face it: We’re a pet crazy crew. And we thought you would like to know a bit more about some of the fabulous pups who took part in our first photo shoot.

In Today’s Spotlight: Goldie

goldie_outdoorsGoldie was found by her humans, Sarah and John, on a dark, desolate county road, en route to Chiricahua National Monument in southeast Arizona. It was just before midnight, not another car was in sight, when they spotted a puppy barely two months old, sitting in the middle of the road. The closest sign of human habitation was a ranch 12 miles away. There were no other members of the litter to be seen, no other sound on the road except for the distant howls of coyotes.

Life has gotten a lot better for this sweet rescue pup.

Now seven years old, Goldie has fallen into a daily routine with Sarah in Tucson. First thing in the morning, they go to Sarah’s office, grab the New York Times (Goldie particularly likes the Food section) and head out to Cafe Luce. After an hour, it’s over to the dog park for a quick romp. Then they settle back into Sarah’s office for the rest of the day.

Goldie does have a job: Gatekeeper. She barks at anyone who approaches Sarah’s office. We’re sorry to report that Goldie is not a very skilled employee. A treat or even a quick scratch behind the ears and the only sound you’ll hear is the thumping of Goldie’s tail.

Goldie takes the summers off and vacations at her home in Crestone, Colorado. She hikes with Sarah, wading deep into the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A dog’s life? Ha!

Her vet in Tucson says she is a Lab, Beagle and Pit Bull mix. Her vet in Colorado claims the combination is Lab, Beagle and Ridgeback. Goldie doesn’t care what you call her, as long as you don’t call her late for dinner (and, no, she doesn’t mind corny jokes).

Goldie loved leading the life of a celebrity dog during our first photo shoot. She got lots of treats, ear massages and hugs, and began having visions of a spread in PEOPLE Pets. But when Huxley arrived on set, Goldie turned into a snarling diva. Joan Crawford could have learned a thing or two from her.

Every dog has his day. Next... Huxley has his say.
